Transformed at the Table

  • Psalm 23:1-6
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

The valleys in life can serve as accelerators in your life.

    Psalm 23:5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows

Sometimes we get so focused on our enemies, we lose sight of how God is preparing us in the valley.

    1. The Opposition in the Valley will be confronted by Opportunity at the Table

We think of a table as an object, but David sees the table as an opportunity.

The intensity of the valley will be confronted by intimacy at the table.

    2. Our Shepherd has the remedy for your irritability

The remedy for your irritability is to allow the Shepherd to anoint you!

    Psalm 23:5
    You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil;

    3. Our Shepherd wants to deal with your fears of insufficiency

    Psalm 23:5
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows

When I live by faith God is always more than enough, but when I live by fear I will never have enough or be enough.

    Psalm 23:6
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

    4. Our Shepherd Covers our Inconsistencies

    Follow (Radaph)

    - to be behind, follow after, pursue, persecute, run after

    Exodus 14:8-9 8
The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly. 9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen and troops—pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea

When I look back on my life, what I thought was a life riddled with inconsistency, as a believer, I actually see His goodness and mercy.

    Isaiah 52:12 ERV
…The Lord will be in front of you. The God of Israel will be behind you. -

    Isaiah 58:8 NCV
Your God will walk before you, and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.

    Psalm 23:6
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.

    5. Our Shepherd wants to help you overcome your insecurities.

    Insecurity:

    1. uncertainty or anxiety about oneself 2. the state of being open to danger or threat; lack of protection.

David had to allow the Lord to help him get over his inconsistency, so he was able to get set free from His insecurity.

    Psalm 51:1-3
1 Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love.Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.2 Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. 3 For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night.

(02:52) been talking about valleys last week we started talking about valleys and this is what I know about valleys the valleys in life can serve as accelerators in life The Valleys in life can serve as accelerators in life we talked about this last week the deeper the valley the greater the victory the darker the valley the brighter the future the more risk involved the greater reward the greater the resistance come on the greater the abundance we talked about last week a lot of Believers want the abundance with no resistance but how you

(03:34) know you're going to have to go through some things to get to the things that God has planned for you let me are you guys here this morning how many know we got to go through some things to get to the things that God has planned for us come on need to next time order an extra shot before he come to church all right the greater the darkness the more I encounter his good and so this morning I realize in a uh Community this size you may be walking through a valley in your family you may be walking through a valley in your

(04:14) marriage a valley in your singleness a valley in your emotional life a valley in your business or your career a valley in your finances no matter what the valley is and no matter how many Shadows are cast and change the fact is listen Christ's victory in the valley never changes we've been learning about the relationship between a shepherd and his sheep the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want God is our Shepherd we are his sheep we're being led how many thankful we're LED sons and daughter ERS we're

(05:00) led by the spirit of God being restored we're walking through dark valleys and in verse five all of a sudden God is preparing a table before me in the presence of my enemies kind of interesting I'm walking through a valley and all of a sudden God is preparing a table before me in the presence of my enemies now if you study this on your own with which I encourage you to do you'll discover that there are two different views of what's going on here in Psalm 23 some think that in verse 5 there is a transition away from the

(05:44) metaphor of a shepherd and sheep to a King and his family for for our sake we are actually going to stick with the metaphor of the shepherd and his sheep look at verse five with me you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies you anoint my head with oil my cup overflows here's just some initial thoughts that I had as I was reflecting and preparing the message today number one God is always ahead of us he's always before us preparing always planning for our good he sees things we don't see

(06:31) he does things we don't expect he's waiting for us I don't know about you he's waiting for us in places where we never thought we'd encounter him I'm so thankful that when I was 18 years old in a bar in Louisiana come on as I pulled up my bar stool God showed up at the bar he ministers to us in moments that are just in time at just the right time and the presence of enemies cannot stop what God is preparing for us in the valley that we're walking through here's what I know sometimes as Believers we

(07:16) get so focused on our enemies we lose sight of what God is preparing for us in the valley this is my opinion but if we're talking more about the enemy than the victory we might miss the purpose of the valley and it leads me to my first point this morning the opposition in the valley will be confronted with opportunity at the table the opposition in the valley will be confronted by opportunity at the table he prepares a table before me what does this imagery mean God God started talking to me about tables in March in fact I preached on

(08:04) tables in our Good Friday service and what they represent in the life of a Believer you see we automatically think of the piece of furniture we all have in our kitchen or our dining room in scripture and in culture tables represent altars everybody say altars places where I encounter God's presence and provision tables are symbolic of God making relationship with you and I priority Revelation says I stand at the door and knock and I come in and I sit and we suck with one another that's Dean Dora's paraphrase right there tables

(08:46) symbolize Unity think about Thanksgiving or holiday Gatherings they symbolize Unity Family and friendship tables represent the gift of hospitality and places where we share a good men great conversations and create lasting memories and tables are a gesture of Good Will indicating a willingness come on how many of you ever encountered the willingness of God God's willingness to share with you from his abundance to share with you his love to share with you his grace to share with you his mercy God is a god of Abundant Life who

(09:28) longs to pull up at the table with you and share and exchange his goodness with you and I the table mentioned in Psalm 23 I believe is a welcome mat for the believer who is struggling with feelings of Abandonment in the valley you see you might be here this morning and you might feel like that nobody knows nobody cares nobody knows what you're going through but can I tell you God is with with you even in your darkest day when we first think when we hear the word table or read the word table we think of a table as an object but David

(10:15) in this Psalm sees the table as an opportunity you see you can't go by your feelings in the valley you have to walk by faith so you don't lose your Victory and you seize the opportunity that is presented to you you in the valley David saw a table in the presence of his enemy he saw the table as an opportunity to get some relief in the midst of the resistance anybody needs some relief come on he saw the table as a place to renew his strength in the midst of the struggle does anybody need to be renewed today he saw the table as

(10:55) a place to get a break from the battle I don't know about you anybody else need to break from the battle that you're going through he saw the table as a place to feast in the middle of the fight anybody need to do some feasting instead of always fighting come on somebody you see God prepares a table right in the middle of your trouble right in the viciousness of the valley God sets a table of Vitality to sustain you in Victory the voice translation says it this way you spread out anybody ever had a good

(11:37) spread we got a a couple in our church uh Jeremy and Jen Patton and they they they through man threw their Valley to be honest they birth this business called culture and crumb shuder boards and it's going it's going crazy y'all I mean churches are finding out about it they've seen what they've done here I mean they're good it's just going go and when they walk in with those trays come come on it's a spread come on how you know what I'm talking about it's a spread it says you spread out a table

(12:07) before me Provisions in the midst of the attack some of you are in the middle of an attack and God is showing and revealing and preparing a table for you so you can get what you need you can get everything you need the Lord is your Shepherd you shall not want so PSM 23 I call it 5A the word for table is some sometimes translated feast or banquet this table doesn't necessarily refer to a piece of furniture used by humans for the word simply means this something spread out how you know God wants to take you into Wide Open Spaces

(12:54) see some of you you've been walking on Paths of righteousness we've been talking about these paths they're narrow path paths they're rough paths sometimes you feel like giving up on these paths but can I tell you and encourage you this morning God wants to bring you into wide open spaces so you can breathe everybody say breathe bre flat places in the hilly country in biblical times were called tables in our day if you've driven through Arizona come on anybody been on I 10 come on New Mexico it's some

(13:31) beautiful boring land all right but they're flat places and we would call them plateaus and sometimes the shepherd stop the flock at these tables or these plateaus and allow them to eat and rest as they headed for the fold or the Sheep pin listen can I just tell you this tables Elevate you from the valley floor and actually position you above whatever is happening in the Valley can I encourage you will you take a seat at the table and allow the Lord to elevate you over whatever is going on in your life here's what I felt like God wanted

(14:13) to help us with today the intensity of the valley will be confronted by intimacy at the table the intensity of the valley will be confronted by intimacy at the table you see the intensity everybody through something intense lately the intensity of the valley you're currently walking through will be greeted with an invitation for greater Intimacy in your relationship with Jesus that's the purpose don't leave without understanding that the purpose of the valley that you're walking through listen it's not to just get you blessed

(14:53) come on it's not to just get you stronger it's to get you closer to him so you'll stop relying on your own own strength and you'll have a greater trust in what he and he alone can do in your life we've been singing about it all morning I trust in God my savior right this is what we've been singing about all morning long God wants to relieve us of the intensity of the valley and he offers us an opportunity to know him like we've never known him before God prepares a table before us to draw

(15:33) closer to us and in the face of my enemies I love it in the face of my enemies God reveals himself to me face to face at the table when I feel that I've been abandoned God extends an invitation and he welcomes me to the table of intimacy to relieve me from the intensity that I'm walking through yesterday we had our RLC business Network and we had uh kuami Anu who was a member here at real life church for a long time and God is doing some amazing things in his life and uh one of the ways he said we're talking about

(16:16) business and one of the ways he said you overcome adversity in business is having the ability to see opportunity in the midst of the adversity leads me to my second Point Our Shepherd has the remedy for your irritability anybody ever been irritated before how have you irritated right now don't raise your hand or look at your neighbor when you're in the midst of a valley and in the midst of a battle it's easy to become irritable and I really felt like some of us here today are irritated by what you're going through and you're just not

(17:00) fun to be around I felt like there were some folks at church this morning who needed to have a shift in their attitude I'm preaching to myself too come on somebody some of you are irritated by what you think is happening to you in the valley instead of understanding it's actually happening for you in the valley you see some of us are sick and tired of being sick and tired how you sick and tired and be as sick and tired and you feel as though the valley has gotten the best of you instead of thinking the

(17:38) valley is actually bringing the best out of you and some of us have allowed irritation and frustration to cause us to lose our oil you're irritated can I just just make it plain and simple you're irritated because you're walking through the valley and you're on empty you're on E you ever been come on driving through nomus or driving through here and you realize you got to get gas but you're on E you know that's past e and there's only three gas stations in Nomas come on somebody and you need to

(18:24) find right this is what I'm talking you are on E and you're irritated because things see seem to keep happening to you and God wants to persuade you this morning that they're actually happening for you the remedy for your irritability is this allow the shepherd to anoint you he anoints my head with oil he prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemy and the first thing he does is he anoints my head with oil listen you don't need your head Anointed with oil if you're already full of oil

(19:07) he showing a picture listen this sheep is dry this sheep is IR it don't want to be touched it don't want to be mess with it's irritating and the first thing he does when you and I pull up to the table is he anoints your head with oil oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit in Scripture it is the Assurance of God's Presence Power and protection on me when my enemies surround me the holy spirit is with us to help us with any irritations difficulties and conflicts oil was used by Shepherds to soothe and

(19:46) heal the irritations and wounds a sheep experienced the shepherd would examine the Sheep as they entered into the fold or the Sheep pin to make sure none of them were bruised used injured or sick and to the wounds he would apply oil somebody say oil and the oil would soothe the wound he would also apply the oil to the head of the sheep and if it had horns to the horns to help keep the flies and other insects away the Sheep were safe and they could sleep without fear notice the shepherd starts with the head why does

(20:30) he do that you would start by anointing the head so it would flow all the way down your neck come on down your shoulders all the way to your feet come on how you want to be anointed from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet but I had some other thoughts how many of you know if you can get your head right it's easier to get other things in your life right if you can get your thinking right come on if you you can get the anointing come on on your thought life come on how you know your actions will follow the actions

(21:05) that follow will be right you see we have a bunch of anointed Believers that have no wisdom and no common sense have you ever been annoyed by flies while eating a meal outside just the front row last year we we started barbecueing I'm like we do every summer and I don't know but there were a lot of flies in the toas last year man there were flies everywhere I mean we we get a nice little meal out there we'd sit there on the patio and still eating them Burgers but we're acting like they're not there and then

(21:44) all of a sudden we're like you know youever you know guys know what I'm talking about it's annoying right and the person you're eating with they're going like this oh you know they're going flies are annoying they'll ruin a peaceful by just buzzing around your head but isn't this just like us as Believers come on without an anointing this is how we live our lives come on we're just swatting how you doing brother I'm I'm blessed highly favored I'm good you dry come on you're

(22:18) on empty no no I'm good hey what are those flies flying around your life for is it the stink or is it cuz you don't got no anointing I don't know but listen we just live our lives you guys know what I'm talking about we live our lives swatting flies so Amy went out and bought some off come on how you know you can anoint your head with oil back over here and you put that off on man it'll keep everything away including your spouse come on somebody and then I was telling my sister how many fly I got those fly bags

(22:56) hanging up I mean it was nasty and and and my sister said hey have you she lives in Austin they got real bugs in Austin Texas and she sent us these and you put some anointing oil in them and you you light them with fire and not only are you anointed but now the atmosphere is Anointed you know what you need in the presence of the enemy come on you need your head anointed come on and you need an anointed atmosphere listen some of you almost got a breakthrough in worship and if you just lift your hand in the presence of your

(23:29) enemies if you would just dare to sing a song or let loose your praise God just might break you free from what you're going through our Shepherd has the remedy for your irritability three Our Shepherd wants to deal with your fears of insufficiency insufficiency is the lack of adequate supply of something you prepare a table before me in the Pres presence of my enemies you anoint my head with oil my cup overflows my cup everybody say my cup overflows when you walk through the valley according to your fears instead

(24:13) of walking by faith you will always feel like you are a day late and a dollar short and Here Again David is reminding us that the Lord is our shef you remember the first verse of this Psalm the Lord is my shef shepherd I shall not want how many got it memorized come on can we say it together the Lord is my shepherd I shall not and here it is in verse five David is reminding us again hey at the table my cup overflows listen if you're going through Insanity listen if you're experiencing insufficiency come on i' if you're

(24:57) experiencing irab I've got good news come on the Lord is your Shepherd you shall not want in fact your cup overflows and David is reminding us when the Lord is Our Shepherd there's no shortage of his presence when the Lord is Our Shepherd there's no lack of intimacy when the Lord is Our Shepherd there's no deficiency in the tools that he puts in my hands Your Rod and your staff they come comfort me when the Lord is my shepherd there's no inadequacy in handling what life throws at me when the

(25:35) Lord is my shepherd there's no deficit that I'm trying to dig myself out of all the time when the Lord is my shepherd there's no scarcity mindset no no the Lord is my shepherd I shall not want this is what you got to get in your spirit I've been quoting this Psalm and learning it and memorizing it for the last two weeks and I've been praying it and I want to encourage you take this Psalm and just like we talked about last week don't just read it and understand the psalm of the shepherd know The

(26:05) Shepherd of the psalm when I live by faith God is always more than enough somebody say more than enough but when I live by fear I will never have enough or be enough I'll always be insufficient lacking never having what I need but how you know he has everything that you need today if you feel like you're running out and you're always concerned about not having enough or being enough it's time to allow the Holy Spirit to deal with your insufficiency complex you see I want to declare over you today that you're not running out

(26:46) you're actually running over can you just say that I'm run I'm not running out I'm running over now tell your neighbor like you really believe it I'm not running out I'm running over my cup's not empty it's overflowing overl and then in verse six he continues the shepherd continues to want to draw his sheep closer to him and he says this surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever how many you know forever is a long long time and it leads

(27:24) me to the fourth thing that the the shepherd wants to help us with this and and it's this Our Shepherd covers our inconsistencies the Old Testament word there for follow is the word Rolf everybody say rol and it means this to be behind to follow after to pursue to persecute or to run after we did you guys like that song We were singing run run run in hey you know what I just wish sometimes we would just do what the song says I would people running around the church I mean wouldn't that be awesome but this

(28:10) word the the word picture in the Old Testament that this word follow depicts and the way it is most commonly used in the context of is this an enemy pursuing Israel can I just give you an example really quick ex Exodus 148 it says the Lord hardened the heart of pharaoh king of Egypt so that he pursued that's the word followed there so that he pursued the Israelites who were marching out boldly the Egyptians all Pharaoh's horses and chariots Horsemen and troops pursued the Israelites and overtook them

(28:50) as they camped by the sea that word pursued is the word rol followed now stay with me I want you to see the intensity of God's Pursuit because it's the same intensity that God's goodness love and mercy is pursuing you in fact it's not just pursuing you it's overtaking you he's not only preparing a table before you his goodness and mercy come on are coming after you he's not only going before you he's coming behind you why is this important because many of us allow the inconsistencies of our

(29:39) past to dictate our future well I wish I would have made that decision back when I was 24 if we would have just moved to Across the the the N we would have been in a whole different place and you live your life and all you're doing is looking back to the inconsistencies the highs the lows The Valleys God's goodness wants to help you get rid of all the regrets all the things you wish you would have done could have done and should have done come on everybody say that's Grace that's what's chasing after you and then

(30:18) he says not only is my goodness chasing after you he says my murky is chasing after you he says my Mercy in other words God's Mercy wants to help you get rid of the blame and the shame of things that you did do that caused you harm your family harm others harm and he wants to help you so that when you look back you don't see the inconsistencies of your bad decisions you see the goodness come on you see the mercies of God come on making every rough Place smooth and every Valley High Hallelujah you see when I look back on

(30:58) my life come on when I look back on my life what I thought was riddled with inconsistency I actually see his goodness and mercy chasing me down and taking care of everything that I thought was a mistake everything I thought was an accident every bad decision I made he turns it around for my good this is the God we serve according to Psalms 23 The God Who leads me The God Who is beside me along those Still Waters is also the god behind me Isaiah 52:12 says the Lord will be in front of you and the god of Israel will be behind you Isaiah 588

(31:46) says your God will walk before you and the glory of the Lord will te will protect you from behind how are you thankful that the Lord has your behind today Hallelujah we shouldn't be where we are today but because of his goodness towards us that he would send his only begotten son to save me to love me when I was not lovable come on to take the Judgment upon himself when I deserved every bit of it the God who loves me Sent His only begotten son to save me and he died on the cross still pursuing me and chasing me constantly and

(32:39) continually even through my inconsistencies you see what's following you is just as important as what's before you and the shepherd this morning wants to cover your inconsistencies there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and some of you the devil's been reminding you of your past and you need to remind him of his future come on it is taken care of it is under the blood if you are a born again believer it is under the blood it is under the blood surely goodness and mercy shall

(33:17) follow me all the days of my life and he says this I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever everybody say forever leads me to my last Point Our Shepherd wants to help you overcome your insecurities insecurity is uncertainty or anxiety about oneself it's the state of being open to danger or threat a lack of protection David the writer of this Psalm he says I will dwell which means that word dwell means to remain or to settle down I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever this is quite the Declaration by

(34:04) the way because as great as David was how you know come on he had a life riddled with mistakes David committed adultery with baseba he premeditated the murder of Uriah he neglected his family and did not effectively manage his household as a result his son abs Salon rebelled David ordered a census of Israel in Judah which the Bible implies was a sin because it demonstrated a lack of trust in God's ability to maintain and protect Israel David had to allow the Lord listen just like we do he had to allow the Lord to help him get over his

(34:48) inconsistency so he was able to get set free from his insecurity do you hear what I'm saying yes he had to deal with his inconsistency so he could get set free from his insecurity one of the things I've noticed and this is I'm not it's just an observation as a pastor we got some people there on their third and fourth and fifth baptism because they don't understand baptism they don't understand what the Lord's done in their life every time you mistake make a mistake don't mean you

(35:29) got to get back in the tank the tank don't save you the tank is a declaration come on that I'm a part of God's Family come on and that I'm going to walk in God's Victory even when I'm going through a Valley come on you don't got to get baptized every other month no no you've got to get Revelation knowledge of what Christ has done for you so that when you look over your shoulder you don't see the in in consistencies that are keeping you insecure as a believer in your walk with

(36:04) God God wants to make you secure everybody say secure this is why David wrote this Psalm 51 1:3 have mercy on me oh God because of your unfailing love because of your great compassion blot out the stains of my sins wash me clean from my guilt Purify Me from my sin for I recognize my Rebellion listen it haunts me day and night it haunts me day and night this is the same guy that wrote surely his goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever are you

(36:41) kidding me it haunts me day and night maybe you're here this morning and whatever you did 10 years ago or whatever you did yesterday is haunting you it catch you up all night last can I just tell you surely the goodness and and and the mercy of the Lord shall follow you all the days of your life and you shall dwell in the house forever listen The God Who snatched you out of hell the enemy cannot take it back listen God doesn't want you to live with insecurity and uncertainty about your salvation and focus on what you did

(37:15) way back when he wants you to be able to look back and see his goodness and mercy despite what you did and be able to look ahead and what he's prepared for you and this morning I believe God wants to deal with your insecurity your inconsistencies your insufficiency your irritability your intensity that you're walking through by understanding this morning that he's prepared a table of opportunity and this morning I know first service we had five people surrender their lives to Jesus Christ for the very first time and make the

(37:51) Lord Jesus Christ The Shepherd of their life and maybe you're here today with every head bowed and every ey close you say Pastor Dean I need to get right with God I don't understand the goodness of God of him sending his only begotten son to lay his life down for me I don't understand his Mercy that he took upon himself the Judgment that I was but this morning he's inviting you to the table to accept him as your personal Lord and Savior you'd like to be included in that prayer and make a decision today that
